Tell us how you got started in Investment Banking and about your current role.

I first started working at TD Securities through the Women in Capital Markets scholarship program, which included a summer internship at one of the sponsoring banks. I then joined TD Securities full-time after graduating and was placed in the Communications, Media & Technology Investment Banking group as an Associate. I rotated into the Merger and Acquisitions Investment Banking group in my third year at TD Securities and recently joined the Real Estate Investment Banking group as a Director. My primary responsibilities involve client development and supporting the senior members of our investment banking group on their client mandates. Maximizing shareholder value is a key focus for our clients and may take the form of optimizing their capital structure, acquisitions or dispositions, or reviewing strategic alternatives, all against the backdrop of the capital markets and creating an opportunity for us to proactively engage with and support our clients.

What are the main strengths and skills you rely on to be successful in your role?

I've been fortunate to have been involved in many strategic transactions across various industries throughout my career with TD Securities.  My experience on the transactions, along with the guidance and training I have received from my senior colleagues, have formed the basis for my Investment Banking skill set. TD Securities is very focused on developing and training their junior professionals and preparing them for more senior roles, and I have certainly benefited from that training. We have an industry-leading team of experienced, professional and dedicated individuals at TD Securities. Many of these individuals have worked together for a long period of time and are committed to providing integrated solutions to our clients. This creates a culture of exceptional teamwork and allows us to provide high quality advice and execution to our clients. Being a part of this team, being able to leverage the experiences and insights of our partners and having an unwavering focus on the needs of our clients, are important factors in being successful in this role.

What makes you want to come to work every day?

The opportunities to be involved in a wide range of transactions for both smaller and/or private companies, where I've played a primary role with senior executives and been part of the team managing large transactions that garner national media attention, is what makes me want to come to work every day. The variety of transactions and types of clients we work with in the capital markets is extremely interesting and creates an exciting and challenging work environment where you can draw on your past experiences, work with your colleagues to address unique scenarios and continuously learn.

What do you look for in candidates when recruiting on campus?

We look for well-rounded candidates that have a solid academic foundation and a passion for the industry. When recruiting at the analyst and associate level, being able to identify the potential for success at an analytical role is necessary. However, we are also looking for an individual that has the potential to develop into a future leader in the firm. Candidates ideally have a strong academic track record, leadership involvement in extra-curricular activities and clubs, and can demonstrate their intellectual curiosity, drive for success and relationship building skills.
