What is your experience in your current role and who do you connect with?

As an Associate in the Mergers & Acquisitions group at TD Securities, I work on a diverse range of transactions collaborating with all industry groups within Investment Banking, as well as Corporate Banking, Equity Capital Markets, and Debt Capital Markets. My experiences include providing our clients across a variety of industries with strategic and financial advice related to purchases and sales of assets and/or companies, as well as managing sell-side and buy-side M&A processes.

What are the main strengths and skills you rely on to be successful in your role?

To thrive and excel as an Associate in the Mergers & Acquisitions group, I rely on continuously applying and honing my abilities to: thoroughly understand and effectively support our clients’ needs, pay great attention to detail, stay abreast of current events and M&A related activity, prepare and manage financial models, communicate with a variety of external and internal parties, and distill detailed data into key takeaways and presentations to aid executive decision-making.

What made you choose TD Securities?

Upon completing my MBA at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, I had a strong interest in joining TD Securities due to its reputation as a leading Canadian investment bank and a trusted advisor to many of the country’s largest corporations. I was confident that TDS’ strong and diverse deal flow would provide me with ample opportunities to continually grow and develop as I progress in my career at TD. Moreover, my participation in the Rotman Finance Association introduced me to several TD Securities professionals, all of whom demonstrated strong passion for their work and workplace. My desire to join was further confirmed after learning more about the experiences these individuals had at TD Securities and the outstanding culture of the bank and TDS in particular.

You work closely with your team on intense projects. How important are your colleagues?

Teamwork is critical to the work we do at TD Securities. My initial desire to join the firm was largely based on the bank’s outstanding people culture. Having worked on several large-scale transactions, I have gained a great appreciation for the importance of a cohesive, high-performing, and diverse deal team required to effectively tackle and support our clients’ needs. I have consistently found that senior leaders at TD Securities are outstanding in providing guidance, mentorship, and ample learning opportunities, and my peers are always more than willing to exchange ideas and best practices. I attribute my development and growth thus far to the strong calibre of people that I have been fortunate enough to work with on a number of exciting and rewarding projects.

What advice would you offer students interested in securing an Analyst role within Investment Banking?

The ability to effectively communicate and demonstrate a strong academic track record, requisite technical skills and financial knowledge, and a keen interest in capital markets is essential. Additionally, I believe that active involvement in team-based extracurricular activities that enable you to demonstrate and hone your interpersonal skills and leadership experience will help differentiate an application. Most importantly, getting to know a variety of professionals at TD Securities as early as possible and learning about their experiences will provide guidance on what differentiates TD from competitors and how best to demonstrate your passion for joining the firm. Leverage your existing network, reach out to students that have had previous summer internships at TD Securities, and utilize your school’s career centre, industry associations, and alumni base to start building out your network and learning as much as you can about the industry, the role, and TD Securities.
