Tell us about how you got started with TD Securities and your level of responsibility today.

 

I was a Managing Director at a competing firm before I joined TD Securities in 2006, where I was given the opportunity to join as Head of Investment Banking in Quebec. I remain in this role today and also oversee IB’s forest and packaging group in New York. I’m very pleased to note that I’ve been appointed Vice Chairman of Team Quebec for TD. This is an executive team whose mandate is to build the TD brand and presence in the Quebec market and create cross-fertilization opportunities among the various business units.

 

Please explain your role as a team lead and how you work with clients.

 

I work closely with the senior leadership teams of large corporations and institutions - based in Quebec - to help them achieve their financing objectives by raising capital in the public and private markets, as well as assisting with M&A and other transactions. It is vitally important to our success that the team and I continuously deepen our client relationships to better understand their business, industry, strategy and capital needs.  By doing so, we are strategically positioning the firm to assist our clients in key transactions.

 

What skills and strengths do you feel helped you achieve your current level of success?

 

The ability to deliver pointed analysis, strategic advice and build strong client relationships is critical. You also need to foster solid partnerships with colleagues and internal products and industry partners. It is important to note that what brought you to a certain level of your career will not necessarily bring you to the next level. For instance, strong technical ability is very important, however you need to evolve your skillset to build client relationships, generate new ideas and help clients achieve their goals. Eventually your ability to build a strong team, position the firm and build the franchise becomes critical to our success.

 

What kind of development support are the new analysts and associates given to help them build their careers?

 

We have formal training programs on technical skills and a very good organizational orientation when the new class joins us each year. We also have a great mentoring program where all professionals under the MD level are each given the opportunity to choose a senior partner as a mentor each year. This gives everyone the chance to get different perspectives and also get a chance to learn about new industry or product groups. Beyond anything formal, the on-the-job learning is intense and very insightful. We have a strong development culture where we support our junior colleagues to enhance their own client relationships by mentoring them through this stage in their roles. Our approach is team-oriented and we find that this approach helps our analysts and associates build successful careers.
