At TD Securities, we are committed to championing a thriving, inclusive workplace and amplifying the voices and experiences of diverse colleagues. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we're spotlighting Juan Salguero, Director, Working Capital Solutions, Global Transaction Banking.

What does your Hispanic or Latinx identity mean to you?

My Latinx identity is rooted in my Colombian heritage and the strong family values I was raised with. Even though my parents and sister live in Canada, we talk almost every day – a reflection of how deeply connection matters in our culture. No matter where I go, I find comfort in hearing Spanish and connecting with others through our shared language. It makes any place feel a little more like home. I also carry a strong sense of responsibility to give back to the community that helped guide me through major moves in my life and career. Being Latinx shapes how I navigate the world – with resilience, gratitude, and a commitment to community.

What are some cultural traditions, holidays or celebrations you enjoy with your family or community?

Some of my favorite traditions are centered around the holidays. Christmas and New Year's are big moments for us – filled with music, food like buñuelos and natilla, visiting friends and lots of storytelling and laughter. Despite living in different countries, we, as do many in the community, make strong efforts to keep our traditions alive.

What do you feel connects you most to your heritage?

What connects me most to my heritage are the small everyday moments – especially striking up Spanish conversations with people I meet throughout the city. Whether it’s a quick exchange at a local store or a longer conversation with someone at the park, there's an instant sense of familiarity and shared understanding.

In a place as fast paced and diverse as New York City, those moments help me feel grounded in who I am and where I come from. It's more than just language – it's cultural rhythm, a warmth and a way of connecting that reminds me of my family, my roots in Cali and the broader LatinX community I'm proud to be a part of.

Are there Hispanic or Latinx role models who inspire you, and why?

One of my biggest role models are my parents. As Colombian immigrants, they faced so many challenges – from learning a new language to starting over in two different countries – they did it with two young children (my sister and I) and did it with strength and grace. They taught me the value of hard work, humility and staying close to our roots. Watching how they've preserved our culture and passed it on to us inspires me to carry that legacy forward in everything I do.

Have you felt represented in media, education or public life? How has that affected you?

I haven't always felt fully represented in media or education – and when Latinx people did appear, it was often through limited or stereotypical portrayals. That lack of visibility sometimes made it harder to see myself in certain spaces. Over time, though, I've learned to take pride in my identity and recognize the value of being part of the change. Representation matters and I try to show up in a way that reflects my heritage and opens doors for others who share similar backgrounds.

How do you celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM), and why is it important to you?

I celebrate HHM by honoring my Colombian roots and reflecting on the rich culture that shapes me. It’s a time where I make an extra effort to connect with family and friends, share stories and enjoy traditional foods that remind me of home. As a member of the Latin Employee Network at TD Securities, we also plan months in advance for our big event – keep an eye out for more details to come on this year's event!

HHM is important to me because it highlights the contributions and resilience of our community. It is a chance to celebrate where we come from and inspire future generations to be proud of their heritage

What are your hopes for the future of the Hispanic/Latinx community?

My hope for the future of the Hispanic/Latinx community is that we continue to grow in visibility and influence across all areas of society – from education and business to politics and the arts. I want to see more opportunities for young people to succeed without barriers, while still holding onto the rich cultural traditions that define us.

I also hope our community becomes even more united, supporting each other across diverse backgrounds and experiences. Ultimately, I want us to be recognized not only for our contributions but for the strength, resilience and heart we bring to everything we do.

Is there a project or initiative you’re passionate about right now?

I'm passionate about initiatives that support Latinx immigrants and newcomers as they navigate major transitions, whether that's moving to a new city or starting a career. Having experienced those challenges myself, I understand how important it is to have a supportive community and access to resources. I want to help create spaces where people feel welcomed, empowered and connected – so they can thrive without losing touch with their culture and identity. Giving back to the community that has helped guide me is a driving force in both my personal and professional life.

Why is the Latin Employee Network (LEN) important to you?

LEN is important to me because it creates a space where community comes first – a place where we can come together, support each other and celebrate our shared culture. In a busy work environment, it's comforting to have a familiar space to connect with colleagues who understand the unique experiences of being Latinx. This group, which includes our beloved allies, fosters a sense of belonging and empowerment, helping us build relationships, share resources and uplift one another both personally and professionally.

How can others best support and uplift the Hispanic/Latinx community and get involved at TD Securities?

Individuals can support the Hispanic/Latinx community by actively creating inclusive spaces where our voices are heard and valued. This means listening with openness, learning about our diverse cultures and experiences and standing against stereotypes or biases.

At TD Securities, getting involved can start with participating in events and initiatives organized by LEN, or any business resource groups (BRG) for that matter, volunteering as an ally and encouraging open conversations about identity and inclusion. Small actions like these build understanding, strengthen community and create a workplace where everyone feels welcomed and empowered.
